Lillian Dyck was born in 1945 in North Battleford, Saskachewan. She grew up in different areas of Saskatchwan and Alberta. She is now a member of the Gordon’s First Nations, Saskatchewan. Lillian’s father emigrated from Hoi Ping, Canton, China to Canada in 1912. Her mother is Cree and from Gordon’s Reserve.
Dr. Dyck has a B.A. in chemistry (1966), Honours Biochemistry (1968), Master of Science Biochemistry (1970) and Ph.D. in Biological Psychiatry (1981) from the University of Saskatchewan.
Before being summoned to the senate Lillian Dyck was the Associate Dean, Programs, College of Graduate Studies and full Professor, permanent status, in the Neuropsychiatry Research Unit, Department of Psychiatry, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, SK, Canada.
As a neuroscientist, Dr. Dyck has developed new compounds for the Treatment of Neuro-Degenerative Disorders along with the Neuro Psychiatry Research Unit in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Saskatchewan. These compounds may help in healing neuron degenerative disorders such as Parkinson’s Disease, Alzheimer’s Disease and Multiple Sclerosis. Dr. Dyck also initiated the concept of beta-alanines as a new class of compounds that may be useful in neuron degenerative and other disorders.
